Use your phone during an interview
What the iPhone and Android apps do while Copilot listens, including the screen, microphone, interruptions, recordings and the Apple Watch and keyboard controls.
On a phone, Copilot listens through the microphone, so it hears whatever is audible around the phone: the interviewer’s voice playing nearby, and you. Keep Interview Pilot open on the Copilot tab during the interview to see the transcript and answers.
What the phone can hear
The phone apps can’t hear sound inside other apps or on a call on the same phone. They hear the interviewer only when the interview audio plays out loud where the phone’s microphone can pick it up. If you listen to the interview only through headphones, the phone can’t hear the interviewer, and the transcript shows only you.
Before an important interview, tap Start Recording, play a video with speech near the phone and check that the words show up in the transcript. Afterwards, tap the interview title at the top and choose Reset Session so the test isn’t saved.
The screen and other apps
- The screen stays on. From the moment you tap Start Recording until you tap Done, your iPhone doesn’t lock by itself.
- Switching apps. Interview Pilot can keep listening if you switch to another app. Come back to the Copilot tab to see the transcript and answers.
- The screen can turn off. The Android app doesn’t keep your screen on, so your phone’s usual screen timeout applies. Make sure it’s long enough for your interview, or keep the screen awake yourself.
- Keep the app on screen. If the screen turns off or you switch to another app, Android may stop Interview Pilot from hearing anything. Keep it open on the Copilot tab while it listens.
Calls, headphones and other interruptions
- Interruptions. If a phone call, alarm or another app takes over the audio, Copilot pauses listening. When the interruption ends, it picks up again on its own if iOS allows it. If the transcript has stopped updating, tap Clear to restart listening, or tap Stop and then Start Recording.
- Connecting or disconnecting headphones. When an audio device connects or disconnects, Copilot restarts the microphone automatically and keeps listening.
- Bluetooth headsets. With a Bluetooth headset that has a microphone, your iPhone may listen through the headset instead of its own microphone.
- Other apps using the microphone. If a phone call or another app uses the microphone, Copilot may stop hearing the room. If the transcript stops updating, tap Clear to restart listening, or tap Stop and then Start Recording.
Record the interview audio
With Record Interview Audio on, the phone saves a recording of the session so you can replay it later in History. It’s on until you turn it off.
- The recording is saved with the interview when you tap End and End & Save. If you choose Reset Session instead, it’s thrown away.
- Recordings stay on the phone that made them. They aren’t uploaded to your account.
To change it, open Settings (the Profile tab), tap Record Interview and switch Record Interview Audio on or off.
Control Copilot without touching the phone
Apple Watch. With the Interview Pilot app on your Apple Watch, you can start listening, get answers and end the interview from your wrist. The main button shows Record, Answer or End & Save, and a second button stops, clears, resumes or ends, just like on the phone. The watch only works while the iPhone app is open on the Copilot tab.
To check it, open Settings (the Profile tab) and tap Connect Apple Watch. Watch Controls is on until you turn it off, and Connection Status shows whether your watch is ready.
Keyboard. With a Bluetooth keyboard, Return starts listening or asks for an answer and Esc clears or stops. See Keyboard shortcuts.
Keyboard. With a Bluetooth keyboard, Enter starts listening or asks for an answer and Esc clears or stops. See Keyboard shortcuts.
