Follow-ups

Ask Copilot for a different answer, a fix for a misheard word, more detail or an example, or pick a suggested follow-up, without waiting for a new question.

Applies toMacWindowsiPhoneAndroid

Under each answer, Follow-up buttons let you ask Copilot to try again or go further with the same question. Choose one, confirm, and Copilot writes a new answer.

The follow-ups

Follow-upWhat Copilot doesUse it when
New answerWrites a fresh, materially different answer to the same question. The answer took the wrong angle, or you want another option.
Misheard termAssumes a word in the question was transcribed wrong, works out what was probably said, and answers again. The answer is about the wrong thing because a name, acronym or technical term was misheard.
Explain moreGoes deeper on the answer you have. You need more to say.
Give an exampleAdds an example to support the answer. The interviewer wants something concrete.
Suggested follow-upsExpands on a specific point from the answer. One point in the answer is worth building on.

Suggested follow-ups are written by Copilot for each answer, so they change every time. You see up to five of them after the four fixed buttons.

Use a follow-up

  1. Go to the answer

Follow-ups apply to the answer on screen. To use them on an earlier answer, go back to it first.

  2. Choose a follow-up

Click or tap the follow-up. On Mac and Windows, you can also press ⌘1 to ⌘9 on Mac or Ctrl1 to Ctrl9 on Windows, using the number shown on the button.

  3. Confirm

Interview Pilot asks you to confirm, so a mistaken click or key press doesn’t start an answer.

The new answer appears as the next answer in the session, labeled with the follow-up you chose. Each follow-up is a new answer, so it counts toward your weekly Copilot answers on the Free plan.

When follow-ups aren’t available

  • While an answer is being written. Follow-ups turn back on when it finishes.
  • Before the first answer. There’s nothing to follow up on yet.
  • On Mac and Windows, if Show Follow-Up Actions is off. Turn it back on in the workspace under Settings › Appearance. Turning it off also turns off the number shortcuts.

On iPhone and Android, follow-ups always appear under each finished answer.

Follow-ups on a phone

The same follow-ups appear under each answer in the Copilot tab: New answer and Misheard term first, then Explain more and Give an example, then the suggestions. Tap one, then confirm. The confirmation shows the name of the follow-up you chose.

Phones don’t have number shortcuts. With a Bluetooth keyboard, you can still start, answer and move between answers. See Keyboard shortcuts.
