Copilot can’t hear the interviewer on Mac

If the transcript shows your voice but not the interviewer’s, or stays empty, work through these checks in order.

Applies toMac

Interview Pilot listens to two things on your Mac: the interviewer, through your Mac’s audio, and you, through your microphone. When the interviewer doesn’t appear in the transcript, it’s almost always one of the checks below.

The interviewer comes through Screen & System Audio. You come through the microphone.

1. Check your macOS version

Choose Apple menu › About This Mac.

  • macOS 14.4 or later: Interview Pilot hears the meeting straight from your Mac, so speakers and headphones both work. Go to the next check.
  • macOS 14.0 to 14.3: Interview Pilot can only listen through your microphone. It hears the interviewer only if their voice plays out loud through your speakers, so it can’t hear them while you wear headphones. Update macOS in System Settings › General › Software Update to fix this for good.

2. Allow Screen & System Audio

This permission is what lets Interview Pilot hear the meeting.

  1. Check the permission in Interview Pilot

Press ⌘B to show Interview Pilot, open the workspace and go to Settings › Permissions. Screen & System Audio should say Allowed. If it doesn’t, click the button next to it.

  2. Turn it on in System Settings

Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and turn on Interview Pilot. On macOS Sonoma, the setting is called Screen Recording.

  3. Quit and reopen Interview Pilot

macOS may only apply the change after the app restarts. In the workspace, go to Account and click Quit App, then open Interview Pilot again with Spotlight.

If the main button says Enable Permissions instead of Start, a permission is still missing. Click it and allow what macOS asks for.

3. Make sure the meeting is playing on this Mac

Interview Pilot hears the audio your Mac plays. If you joined the call on another device, such as your phone or a second computer, Interview Pilot on this Mac won’t hear the interviewer.

Before your interview, play any video with sound on your Mac, start a session in Interview Pilot and check that the words appear in the transcript.

Still not hearing the interviewer?

Transcription needs an internet connection, so check that you’re online. Then restart your Mac and try the video test in check 3 again. If the interviewer still doesn’t come through, email us with your macOS version, your meeting app and any message you see.
