Copilot can’t hear the interviewer on a phone
If the transcript on your iPhone or Android phone stays empty or misses the interviewer, work through these checks in order.
The iPhone and Android apps listen only through the microphone your phone is using. They can’t tap into the audio of a meeting app, so the interviewer appears in the transcript only when their voice reaches that microphone.
1. Check that the interviewer’s voice reaches the phone
Interview Pilot hears what the phone’s microphone picks up, the same way a voice memo would. If the interviewer’s voice plays only in headphones connected to your computer, the phone can’t hear it.
- iPhone: if Bluetooth headphones with a microphone are connected to your iPhone, iPhone may use their microphone instead of the one in the phone. Interview Pilot restarts listening on its own when you connect or disconnect headphones.
- Android: Interview Pilot listens through your phone’s microphone.
To test, play a video with speech on your computer, open the Copilot tab and tap Start Recording. The words should appear in the transcript.
2. Allow microphone access
If the main button says Enable Permissions instead of Start Recording, Interview Pilot can’t use the microphone.
Tap Enable Permissions. The iPhone Settings app opens on Interview Pilot’s page. Turn on Microphone. If you use Default transcription, also turn on Speech Recognition. Then go back to Interview Pilot.
Tap Enable Permissions and allow microphone access when Android asks. If you see Microphone Permission instead, tap Open Settings, then allow the microphone in Interview Pilot’s permissions.
For more help, see Microphone isn’t working.
3. Watch for calls and other apps
A phone call, Siri or another app that takes over audio pauses Interview Pilot’s listening. When the interruption ends, Interview Pilot carries on if iPhone allows it.
If new words stop appearing after an interruption, tap Clear to start listening again, or tap Stop and then Start Recording. Clear removes the transcript of the current question.
A phone call or another app that uses the microphone can stop Interview Pilot from hearing anything. If new words stop appearing, tap Clear to start listening again, or tap Stop and then Start Recording. Clear removes the transcript of the current question.
4. Keep the app running
While an interview session is in progress, your iPhone doesn’t lock on its own. Interview Pilot can keep listening if you switch to another app, as long as that app doesn’t take over the microphone.
Keep Interview Pilot open on screen while it listens. If you switch to another app or the screen turns off, Android may stop Interview Pilot from hearing anything. If your screen turns off quickly, you can set a longer screen timeout in your phone’s display settings.
5. If you see a message
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Audio setup failed: Microphone permission denied (iPhone) | Allow the microphone, as in check 2. |
| Speech permission denied (iPhone) | Turn on Speech Recognition for Interview Pilot in the iPhone Settings app. |
| Speech recognition not available (iPhone) | Default transcription doesn’t support the chosen language right now. In the Profile tab, tap Transcription & Language and choose another language or Copilot Premium+. |
| Connection failed. Please try again. (Android) | Check your internet connection, then tap Retry Recording. |
| Premium Transcription Unavailable (Android) | Your premium transcription minutes for this week have run out. See Weekly limits and when they reset. |
On iPhone, when your premium transcription minutes run out, Interview Pilot switches to Default transcription, which uses its own language setting. If the transcript appears in the wrong language, see The transcript is in the wrong language.
Still not hearing the interviewer?
Close Interview Pilot completely and open it again, then repeat the video test in check 1. If the interviewer still doesn’t come through, contact us with your phone model, the app version shown under About in the Profile tab, and any message you see.
