Answers aren’t generating
If tapping or clicking for an answer does nothing, or the answer panel shows an error, work through these checks in order.
Copilot writes an answer from the transcript, so it needs words to work with, Copilot answers left for the week and an internet connection. Start with the transcript.
1. Check that the transcript has words
The answer button, Answer on Mac and Windows or Generate Answer on iPhone and Android, doesn’t work while Interview Pilot is listening and the transcript is empty.
- Wait until the question appears in the transcript, then ask for the answer.
- Or type the question in Add extra context... below the transcript. Copilot can answer from that text alone.
If the transcript stays empty while the interviewer speaks, Interview Pilot can’t hear them. See the guide for your device: Mac, Windows or phone.
2. Check your Copilot answers for the week
On the Free plan, you get 10 Copilot answers a week. What you see when they run out depends on your device:
| Device | What you see |
|---|---|
| Mac | Failed to generate response. Please try again. in the answer panel |
| Windows | Weekly Copilot usage limit exceeded. in the answer panel |
| iPhone and Android | The plans screen opens when you ask for an answer |
On Mac, the same message appears for other problems too, so check what’s left: in the workspace, go to Account and look at Copilot Use Left. On iPhone and Android, open the Profile tab and tap Usage.
You can wait for the weekly reset or upgrade to Pro. See Weekly limits and when they reset.
3. Check your internet connection
Answers are written online. If your connection drops while Copilot is writing, you may see one of these:
- Mac, Windows and iPhone: Failed to generate response. Please try again. in the answer panel.
- Android: Something went wrong with Failed to generate response. Please try again. Tap OK, then tap Retry Answer.
Check your connection, then ask for the answer again. If the connection keeps dropping, see Interview Pilot keeps connecting or loses its connection.
4. Check that you’re signed in on Mac or Windows
The desktop apps need you to be signed in to write answers. If you see the Welcome to Interview Pilot screen, or Your session has expired. Please sign in again., click Sign In and finish signing in in your browser.
On Windows, these messages also mean you need to sign in again:
- Sign in to Interview Pilot before generating an answer.
- Sign in to Interview Pilot again before generating an answer.
The iPhone and Android apps write answers whether or not you’re signed in.
5. If Auto-Generate doesn’t start an answer
With Auto-Generate on, Copilot starts an answer by itself when the speaking stops. It waits until:
- Interview Pilot has been listening for at least 5 seconds,
- the transcript has words, and
- it hears silence.
The button then counts down your Silence Delay, for example Generating in 3s. Background noise or music can keep Interview Pilot from detecting silence. You can always ask for the answer yourself with the answer button.
On Android, Auto-Generate only works in Question mode.
Still no answers?
Quit and reopen Interview Pilot, then try a short question typed into Add extra context.... If that doesn’t produce an answer either, contact us with your device, the app version and the message you see.
