How the live Copilot works
Follow what happens from the moment the interviewer speaks to the answer on your screen, and what Interview Pilot saves to History.
Copilot listens to your interview, writes down what it hears, and turns the interviewer’s question into an answer based on your interview profile. You decide when to ask for an answer, or let Copilot do it when the interviewer stops talking.
1. Copilot listens
What Copilot can hear depends on your device.
| Device | What Copilot listens to |
|---|---|
| Mac | Your Mac’s audio, which includes the interviewer in your meeting app, and your microphone. Hearing your Mac’s audio needs macOS 14.4 or later. |
| Windows | The sound playing on your PC’s default playback device, and your default communications microphone. |
| iPhone and Android | The phone’s microphone only. The phone hears the interviewer when their voice plays out loud nearby, and it hears you. |
On a Mac, the interviewer can come through your speakers or your headphones. The same goes for Windows, as long as your meeting app plays on the default playback device. A phone can’t hear sound that plays only in your headphones or on a call on the phone itself.
If the interviewer doesn’t show up in the transcript on a Mac, see Copilot can’t hear the interviewer on Mac.
2. The live transcript
The words appear in the transcript as people speak.
- Mac and Windows: the transcript panel shows Listening with a red dot. Before anyone speaks, it shows Listening....
- iPhone: a moving sound wave at the top shows that Copilot is listening. Before anyone speaks, the transcript shows Waiting for speech....
- Android: a red dot at the top shows that Copilot is listening. Before anyone speaks, the transcript shows Waiting for speech....
Copilot transcribes in the interview language you chose, or detects it for you. See Interview language and app language.
3. Copilot writes an answer
When you press Answer on Mac and Windows, or Generate Answer on a phone, Copilot writes an answer and you see it appear as it’s written. With Auto-Generate on, Copilot does this for you after the interviewer stops talking. See Continuous or Question mode, and Auto-Generate.
Each answer draws on:
- The transcript. Copilot looks for the interviewer’s newest question near the end and answers that, using earlier talk as background.
- Your interview profile. Copilot uses the profile selected for interviews: your experience, skills, the job details and any documents you added. It only brings these in when they help answer the question.
- Your custom instructions, if your profile has any.
- Anything you add. Typed notes, screenshots on a computer and photos on a phone. See Add context.
- Your Copilot settings. The response style, and options such as Assume Experience and Enable Natural Speech. See Choose how answers are written.
With Enable Context Awareness on, Copilot also remembers the recent questions and answers in the session, so a follow-up question like “Why did you choose that approach?” makes sense.
Copilot needs an internet connection to transcribe and to write answers.
4. Keep going
Each answer gets a number, such as Q1 and Q2, and you can go back to earlier ones during the session. Under each answer, follow-ups let you ask for a different answer, more detail or an example. See Follow-ups.
What’s saved to History
The interview is saved to History as soon as the first answer is ready, and each new answer is added as you go. Clicking End clears the panels and starts a fresh session. Your saved interview stays in History.

History keeps the questions and answers. When you’re signed in, your interviews are saved to your account too. See How sync works across your devices.
