ChatGPT is a general chatbot: it answers what you type, paste, upload or say to it, which makes it strong for interview preparation. An AI interview assistant is built for the live call: it hears the interviewer through your computer or phone, keeps a running transcript and drafts an answer to the latest question from a profile you set up in advance. For practice, ChatGPT covers most needs; a live assistant only matters in an interview where the employer allows tools.
Disclosure: Interview Pilot publishes this guide and makes the live interview assistant used as the example. ChatGPT facts come from OpenAI's help center and Interview Pilot facts from its own help center, both checked on October 21, 2026.
The difference at a glance
| Factor | ChatGPT | Live interview assistant (Interview Pilot as the example) |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Any task you bring to a chat | Following a live interview |
| How the question gets in | You type, paste, upload or speak it | It hears the call and transcribes it continuously |
| When an answer starts | After you send a message | When you press Answer, or automatically after the interviewer stops |
| Context | What you add to the chat, files, projects and memory | A saved interview profile, notes and screenshots or photos |
| Output | Text, or a spoken reply in Voice | Text on your screen, streamed as it is written |
| Best use | Research, story building, practice and feedback | Live prompts in interviews that permit them |
| Free use | A free plan with limits | A free plan with weekly limits |
How each one hears the question
ChatGPT
A normal chat only knows what you give it. ChatGPT Voice, described in OpenAI's Voice help page, lets you speak and hear a spoken reply. Its Live option listens and speaks at the same time, and its Standard option transcribes your speech before replying. All of them are a conversation between you and ChatGPT, with ChatGPT talking back out loud.
ChatGPT Record is the closest thing to meeting capture. OpenAI's Record help page says it works in the macOS desktop app on eligible paid and workspace plans, may need microphone and system-audio permission, transcribes live while a timer runs, and produces notes and a summary after you press Send. It is a meeting note-taker that works after the fact, and OpenAI reminds users to get the right consents before recording anyone.
A live interview assistant
An interview assistant listens to the call itself. Interview Pilot's desktop apps hear the meeting through the computer's audio and you through the microphone, and its phone apps listen through the phone's microphone, so they hear the interviewer only when the voice plays out loud nearby. The guide to how the live Copilot works sets out what each device hears.
From question to usable answer
Speed in an interview isn't about how fast a model writes. It's about how many steps sit between the interviewer finishing a question and you having something useful.
With ChatGPT, the question first has to reach the chat. You type or paste it, or speak it aloud to Voice, and only then does a reply start. Each of those steps takes time while the interviewer waits, and speaking to Voice during a call puts a second voice in the room.
A live assistant removes those steps. The transcript is already on screen, and Copilot looks for the newest question near its end. You press Answer, or switch on Auto-Generate so an answer starts once the interviewer stops talking, after a short countdown you can cancel. The listening modes guide explains the countdown and the two interview modes. Answers stream in as they are written, and follow-ups under each one ask for a different version, more detail or an example.
Context: your resume, the job and what was said
Both tools answer better with your material.
- ChatGPT. OpenAI's file uploads page supports documents such as DOCX, PDF and TXT on free and paid plans, with free users limited to three uploads a day. Projects and memory can carry context between chats.
- Interview assistant. Context is set up once, before the call, as an interview profile: your experience, skills, the job details, custom instructions and documents. During the interview you can add a typed note, a screenshot on a computer or a photo on a phone, and Context Awareness lets a follow-up question build on the previous answer.
The practical difference is preparation time. ChatGPT needs the context in each relevant chat or project, while the assistant's profile is already loaded when the call starts.
Accuracy and how each one fails
ChatGPT's own help center says, in its page on whether ChatGPT tells the truth, that it can be wrong and can invent quotes and citations. For interview preparation that means checking every company fact against the original source.
A live assistant adds a second place to go wrong: the transcript. A misheard question produces a confident answer to the wrong question, and a name or acronym can come out garbled. It can also fill gaps in your experience unless you stop it. Interview Pilot's Assume Experience option starts switched on and can answer "have you done this" with an example your profile doesn't contain.
Privacy and what gets stored
| Question | ChatGPT | Interview Pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Is audio kept? | Record audio is used for transcription and then deleted | The desktop apps don't record audio; the phone apps record by default and keep audio on the phone |
| Are transcripts kept? | Record transcripts and notes follow your normal chat retention | Transcripts and answers are saved to History, and to your account when signed in |
| What is processed online? | Everything you send to the chat | What Copilot hears, your selected profile and any notes or screenshots you add |
| Setting worth checking | Improve the model for everyone in data controls; with it on, Record transcripts and notes may be used for training | Record Interview Audio on a phone, which starts switched on |
| Where to read more | OpenAI's help center | The data and privacy guide, which points to the privacy policy for the providers that help process it |
Whichever you use, keep your employer's confidential details out, and remember that the interviewer's words become data too. A recording or transcript made without everyone's agreement is a consent problem, whatever the tool.
Cost models
ChatGPT has a free plan with limits on features such as Voice and uploads, and paid plans that raise them. If you already pay for it for other work, interview preparation costs nothing extra.
Interview Pilot's free plan gives 3 interview sessions a week per device, 10 Copilot answers and 30 minutes of premium transcription. Pro removes the session and answer limits, raises premium transcription to 3,000 minutes a week and adds AI mock interviews on the web; the Free and Pro comparison has the details and current prices are on the pricing page. One subscription covers Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and the web.
If you only need preparation, ChatGPT or a free practice tool covers most of it. The case for paying for a live assistant rests on interviews where you may actually use it.
What the interviewer sees and the rules
Neither tool changes what the interviewer can see: your camera, your audio and anything you share. A ChatGPT window in an entire-screen share is visible like any other window, and typing or speaking to a chatbot mid-question shows on camera.
The rules don't depend on the brand either. Greenhouse's guidelines for AI in its interviews encourage AI for preparation and, in some work assessments, expect candidates to use it and explain how. For live interviews, they ask candidates not to use AI unless instructed or agreed, and not to read from AI-produced answers, and they warn that undisclosed use outside the guidelines may disqualify a candidacy.
That pattern, AI welcome before and in designated tasks, unwelcome in live conversation unless agreed, covers a ChatGPT tab exactly as it covers a dedicated assistant. Ask the recruiter what's allowed, keep answers within your real experience, and rehearse until you can answer without either tool.
Which one to use for each job
| Task | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Researching the company | ChatGPT | Quick summaries you can check against the original sources |
| Turning experience into stories | ChatGPT | Back-and-forth editing on your own notes |
| Spoken mock interviews | Either | ChatGPT Voice, or a tool that asks questions aloud and scores your answer |
| A take-home task that invites AI | ChatGPT or the tool the employer names | Follow the task's instructions |
| A live interview that permits tools | Live assistant | It hears the call and needs no typing |
| A live interview that bans AI | Neither | The rule covers every AI tool |
The roundup of AI mock interview tools compares practice-only options if speaking practice is the gap.
Test both before you decide
- Run one preparation session in ChatGPT with a real job posting and your resume, and judge whether you need anything more.
- Check your interview's rules in the invitation or with the recruiter.
- If live help is allowed, test the assistant on your real setup: start a meeting, join from a second device, and check that the interviewer's voice reaches the transcript.
- Ask a friend three questions and time how long each tool takes to give you something usable.
- Read the privacy settings of both and switch off anything you don't need.
- Answer the same three questions with no tool at all, so you know where you stand without help.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT listen to my interview?
Not in a normal chat. ChatGPT Voice is a conversation with ChatGPT, and ChatGPT Record on the macOS desktop app can transcribe a meeting but produces its notes after you press Send. Recording an interviewer needs their consent and, under many employers' rules, permission.
Is ChatGPT good enough for interview prep?
For most people, yes. It can turn a job posting into likely questions, help shape real experience into short stories, run a mock interview and give feedback. Check any company fact it gives you against the original source.
Can I use ChatGPT during a live interview?
Only where the employer allows AI in that interview. Published rules such as Greenhouse's ask candidates not to use AI in live interviews unless instructed or agreed. Practically, typing or speaking a question to ChatGPT mid-call is slow and visible.
Is an AI interview assistant better than ChatGPT?
For a live call where tools are permitted, a purpose-built assistant is faster because it hears the question and keeps your profile loaded. For research, story building and feedback, ChatGPT is as good or better and you may already have it.
Do I need both ChatGPT and an AI interview assistant?
Not usually. Most candidates need preparation, which ChatGPT or a free mock interview tool covers. A live assistant is worth adding only if you have interviews where it is allowed and you have tested it on your own setup.
