Using an AI Interview Assistant With HireVue
Can a HireVue AI interview assistant help? What each HireVue format involves, what live help can and cannot do there, the rules that apply and how to prepare.

Many HireVue interviews are one-way: you record answers to questions the employer chose, or play game-based assessments, with nobody on the other end. A live interview assistant is built to follow a conversation, so in those formats it has little to listen to, and reading generated answers to the camera puts words that aren't yours into the recording the employer reviews. Use AI to practice beforehand, check the employer's rules for HireVue Live calls, and ask for accommodations through HireVue's own process.
HireVue formats and what each one asks of you
"A HireVue" can mean several different things, set up by the company you applied to. HireVue's candidate help pages describe them separately.
| Format | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| On Demand interview | You record video answers at a time you choose; some questions ask for an essay or multiple choice | What is an On Demand interview |
| Video-based assessment | Usually five to eight situational, scenario or past-behavior questions, with several minutes per answer | HireVue's candidate FAQ |
| Game-based assessment | Short games, each with video instructions, a level and a timer | Game-based assessment steps |
| CodeVue | A coding challenge in a language the company picks, on a computer only | CodeVue FAQ |
| Live interview | A scheduled real-time video call with someone from the company | What is a Live interview |
Some On Demand interviews also ask you to share your screen while you complete a task. HireVue's screen sharing article says that needs the latest Chrome or Edge on a desktop or laptop.
HireVue suggests setting aside 45 minutes for an assessment, although most take under 20 to 30. For the questions candidates commonly face and how to structure an answer, see the HireVue interview questions guide.
What the employer controls and sees
Almost every rule in a HireVue comes from the hiring company, not the candidate.
-
Recordings. The employer receives your recorded and typed answers and controls the recordings. You can't replay your submitted interview through HireVue afterward; requests go to the hiring company.
-
Questions. All candidates for the same role get the same pre-selected questions and the same time to read and prepare, and HireVue says it uses security measures to keep questions from being viewed early, according to its article on viewing questions.
-
Attempts and retakes. The number of attempts per question is set by the employer and shown before you begin. Once you submit an answer you can't return to it, and only the hiring company can approve a new attempt, as HireVue's retake article explains.
-
Terms. You accept terms and conditions before the interview starts, and HireVue's On Demand walkthrough sends questions about them to the hiring company.
-
Conduct checks. HireVue's page on cheating and fraud mitigation lists controls employers can configure, including candidate conduct policies, browser-focus tracking, limits on copy and paste, and image capture in eligible On Demand experiences. HireVue says these surface signals for recruiter review, that a single behavior isn't proof of fraud, and that it doesn't reject candidates automatically. It also tells employers to explain their checks before the interview begins, so read every instruction screen.
How answers are judged matters too. HireVue's AI in hiring page says its video assessments don't use facial analysis, video or audio data, and analyze only the transcript of your responses, with humans making the final hiring decision.
Some jurisdictions add rules on the employer's side. Illinois' Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act requires employers that use AI to analyze recorded interviews for Illinois-based roles to tell you beforehand, explain how it works and get your consent, and to delete your videos within 30 days if you ask. The guide to how AI interviews work covers what to look for in an employer's disclosure.
What a live assistant can and cannot do on HireVue
A live interview assistant listens to an interviewer, transcribes the question and drafts an answer from your profile. Here is how that maps onto each format.
| Format | What live help could do | Why it fits poorly or not at all |
|---|---|---|
| On Demand video answers | Draft a reply to a question shown on screen | There is no conversation; every candidate gets the same fixed prep time; reading text aloud is recorded, and where AI scoring is used, the transcript of those words is what it reads |
| Essay or multiple choice | Little | Your typed answer must be yours, and employers can limit copy and paste |
| Game-based assessment | Nothing | There is no speech to transcribe; the games measure how you play |
| CodeVue | Only what the employer explicitly allows | The company sets the language and decides any retake |
| Live interview | The same as on any video call | Only where the employer has said tools are allowed |
A HireVue On Demand interview rewards preparation, not assistance. HireVue's own FAQ says no course can game its assessments beyond ordinary practice, and its video assessment scoring reads only the transcript of your words. A script read from a screen puts claims into that record that you may not be able to support when a person interviews you later.
The rules that apply to AI in a HireVue
HireVue's candidate pages leave conduct rules to the employer, so the employer's published policy and the instructions in your invitation are what count.
Mastercard's AI guidelines for candidates are a clear example of an employer rule. They encourage AI to get ready for interviews, ask candidates to take part in interviews without using AI to develop their responses, and say AI may be invited in some technical assessments, with clear guidelines given at the time. They also say Mastercard generally doesn't permit recording or transcribing interviews without its approval.
If you can't find a rule, ask before you start. A short note works: "Before I complete the recorded interview, could you confirm whether notes or any AI tools are allowed?" Keep the reply.
Use AI before the HireVue instead
Practice is where AI earns its place for a recorded interview.
- Use HireVue's practice questions. HireVue's practice FAQ offers three generic practice questions you can redo without limit, with playback so you can check light and sound. They are never uploaded or seen by anyone.
- Practice speaking to a timer. Answer role-specific questions out loud within the time you expect, without stopping to restart. Interview Pilot's AI mock interviews ask a question out loud, listen to your spoken answer and score it, on a phone or on the web.
- Read your own transcript. Because HireVue's AI scoring reads the transcript of what you say, read a transcript of each practice answer. Check that the first sentence answers the question, that your own action is clear, and that the result is concrete. Filler that sounds fine aloud looks thin on the page.
- Rehearse outlines, not scripts. Keep three or four words per story so each take sounds like you talking, not reciting.
The video interview preparation guide covers camera position, light and delivery.
Setup and test checklist for a HireVue
- Open the invitation in Chrome on the device you'll use; HireVue recommends it for On Demand interviews.
- Check your connection. HireVue asks for at least 350 Kbps up and down, and a charged or plugged-in device.
- Close apps that use the camera, such as other video calls, before you start.
- On a Mac, allow your browser in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording if the interview includes screen sharing.
- Use a computer for CodeVue and screen-sharing tasks, since neither works on mobile.
- For a Live interview, run the system test link from the invitation at least 24 hours early.
- Note your attempts. Read the screen that shows how many tries you get per question before you click Continue.
- Finish practice before the real start. Practice mode shows a blue ribbon at the top; if it's missing, you're in the real interview.
Accommodations on HireVue
An accommodation is the approved route to extra time or a different format, and it goes through HireVue's process and the employer, not around them. HireVue's accommodations steps let you click a link on the first page of the interview to request additional time on timed questions; anything else goes to the hiring company.
HireVue's FAQ adds that neurodiverse candidates may be able to ask for the questions in advance, and its AI in hiring page mentions accommodations such as allowing retakes and removing timers. If you rely on captions or speech-to-text, ask before the deadline. The interview accommodation research summary shows how often candidates ask and what they request.
Frequently asked questions
Can HireVue detect if you use AI?
HireVue lists integrity controls that employers can switch on, such as browser-focus tracking, limits on copy and paste and image capture in eligible On Demand interviews, which flag behavior for a recruiter to review. Its fraud mitigation page doesn't claim to detect specific AI tools. Whether you may use AI at all is the employer's rule.
Can I use notes in a HireVue interview?
HireVue's candidate FAQ doesn't address notes, so the employer's instructions decide. If the invitation is silent, ask the recruiter. Notes you wrote yourself are a different question from AI-generated text read during the recording.
Can you redo a HireVue answer?
Only if the employer allowed more than one attempt per question, which the interview shows before you begin. Once you submit an answer you can't go back to it, and a full retake needs the hiring company's approval.
Does HireVue use AI to score interviews?
For video assessments, HireVue says its AI analyzes only the transcript of your responses, not facial, video or audio data, and that people make the final hiring decision. For Illinois-based roles, an employer that uses AI to analyze recorded interviews must tell you, explain it and get your consent first.
Can I use ChatGPT to prepare for a HireVue?
Yes. Practice questions, story outlines and feedback on recorded practice answers are preparation, which employers such as Mastercard encourage. Rehearse aloud and keep the stories true, because the real answers are recorded and may be discussed in later interviews.
Is a HireVue Live interview different from an On Demand one?
Yes. A Live interview is a scheduled real-time call with someone from the company, much like any video call, with screen sharing on a computer. On Demand answers are recorded with nobody on the other end and reviewed later.
