How AI Interviews Work: Tools, Decisions, and Questions to Ask

Understand recorded interviews, automated assessments, and AI-assisted screening without assuming every employer uses the same system.

A recorded interview screen connects to labeled review steps without implying a hidden score.

“AI interview” is not one standardized format. It may refer to a chatbot that asks screening questions, a recorded video reviewed by people, an assessment scored with automated methods, or a broader hiring platform that combines several tools.

In testimony published by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, employment technology examples include chatbots, gamified assessments, recorded video interviews, and automated analysis. The testimony also describes potential discrimination and accessibility risks. It does not mean every employer uses every method.

AI interview can describe different systems

Separate what you can observe from what you cannot. You may see timed prompts and record responses, while the employer may use human review, automated analysis, or both. A conversational screen may only collect answers for later review.

Do not assume facial expression, eye contact, word choice, or tone is being scored unless the employer or vendor says so. Do not assume it is not being analyzed either. Look for the specific notice attached to your assessment.

Read the employer disclosure

Before starting, review the invitation, privacy notice, consent language, retention information, and instructions. Note:

  • what data is collected;
  • whether recording is required;
  • who or what evaluates it;
  • how long you have for each response; and
  • how to request support or an alternative.

Save the instructions for your records. For a named platform, the HireVue preparation guide explains how to separate platform mechanics from interview content.

Prepare for the observable task

Practice concise, truthful answers and test the permitted equipment. If questions are recorded, look at the camera when speaking naturally, but prioritize clear evidence over trying to perform for a guessed algorithm. Follow the rules on notes, retries, outside help, and AI tools.

The broader video interview question guide can help with answer practice.

Ask for help when access is a barrier

If technology, disability, language access, or another barrier prevents fair participation, use the contact information in the invitation promptly. Describe the part of the process you cannot access and the adjustment you need. Requirements and rights vary by jurisdiction, so use official local guidance for legal questions.
