Tell the recruiter which role you mean, why your background is relevant, and what you are asking them to do. Keep the first message easy to understand without opening several attachments. A connection request, a job application, and a recruiter conversation are different actions; completing one does not automatically complete the others.
Carnegie Mellon's outreach examples connect the candidate's background to a specific company or opportunity. Use that principle rather than sending identical notes to everyone with "recruiter" in their title.
Find the relevant person first
Check whether the recruiter publicly works on the job's function, location, or company. A recruiter named on the vacancy or discussing that opening is a stronger lead than an unrelated recruiter at the same employer.
If you are still locating appropriate openings, start with our LinkedIn job-search guide. Outreach is more focused once you have a real role to reference.
Also review your own profile. The role described in your note should make sense alongside your headline and experience. You do not need a flashy headline; clear headline examples can help you describe your actual work.
A connection note is an introduction
Where your account offers a note with a connection invitation, keep it brief. Available features and limits can vary; use what the interface actually allows rather than designing your approach around a fixed character allowance.
Original example:
Hi Maya, I applied for your team's support analyst role, job 216. My background is in troubleshooting customer billing issues. I'd be glad to connect.
Do not compress your whole resume into this space. If a note is unavailable, use an appropriate messaging option already available to you or the employer's stated contact route. You do not need to buy a subscription simply to submit a job application.
A direct message can include one useful detail
Hi Maya, I saw your post about the support analyst opening and applied through the careers page. In my current role, I investigate billing cases and document recurring issues for the product team. That seems relevant to the troubleshooting and reporting responsibilities in job 216. If you're handling this search, I'd welcome a conversation about the role. Thank you, Dev.
This fictional message is specific but does not demand an interview. Replace its experience with your own; do not claim to have applied until you have.
If you have not applied because of a genuine unanswered question, ask that question directly instead of sending a generic request to chat.
After they reply, follow their process
If they ask for a resume or direct you to the application portal, use that route. Do not treat a friendly reply or accepted connection as confirmation that you have advanced in the hiring process.
Before sending sensitive information, check that the conversation and destination belong to the real employer or recruiting firm. A profile alone is not sufficient verification for sharing identity documents.
If there is no response
A single brief follow-up after a reasonable interval can be enough when you have a genuine question. Follow any stated contact policy, and stop if they decline. Do not contact the same person across several channels in quick succession.
For an already submitted application, our application follow-up guide covers how to ask about status. Continue your search while waiting; silence does not tell you whether the person saw the message or manages that vacancy.
