How to Ask for Interview Feedback and Use the Reply

Ask for useful interview feedback without disputing a rejection, then turn specific comments into a focused practice plan.

An open reply envelope and marked-up note suggest constructive interview feedback.

Ask your recruiting contact for one or two specific areas you could improve, acknowledge that they may not be able to share feedback, and do not argue with the hiring decision. The goal is information for your next interview, not a second attempt to win the same decision by email.

Employers differ in what they provide. For example, College Board's candidate FAQ says feedback is generally unavailable, while candidates reaching its final stages can ask their recruiter. That is one employer's policy, not a promise that every company will respond.

Choose the right moment and recipient

After a rejection, reply to the recruiter or person who communicated the outcome. If the message says feedback is unavailable, respect that rather than seeking another interviewer to bypass the policy.

If the decision is still pending and you need to know the status, send an interview-update request instead. Asking for a performance verdict during an active selection process can put the recipient in an awkward position.

You can also request feedback after a mock interview. There, agree on the feedback criteria beforehand because the session's purpose is practice.

A focused feedback request

This original example asks about one observable part of the interview:

Hi Priya,

Thank you for the update and for arranging my conversations with the team. I appreciate the time everyone spent with me.

If you are able to share feedback, was there anything I could have explained more clearly in the project discussion? I'd value a specific point to work on for future interviews. I understand if the team cannot provide individual feedback.

Best, Taylor

Do not attach a rebuttal, ask who was hired, or request all of the panel's notes. If you just want to acknowledge the outcome, our rejection-response guide covers that separate task.

Turn a comment into something you can practice

The examples below are hypothetical, not actual employer feedback.

CommentA useful next actionWhat not to conclude
Your examples were hard to followRetell one project with a clear problem, your actions, and the outcomeThat all your experience is irrelevant
We needed deeper forecasting experienceCompare the job's required work with your actual experience and choose future targets accordinglyThat changing your wording creates experience you do not have
We could not tell what you personally ownedSeparate your decisions from the team's result in two practice answersThat you should take credit for everyone else's work
Another candidate was a closer matchRecord the outcome and continue your searchThat this identifies a specific interview mistake

For a clarity problem, use a STAR practice question, record an answer, and check whether a listener can identify your contribution. For an experience gap, decide whether it needs development or a different target role. Those are different problems.

If the feedback is vague or there is no reply

When the person has invited discussion, one clarification can help: "Was the missing detail mainly about my approach or the outcome?" Thank them for answering rather than asking them to defend the decision.

If they decline or do not respond, do not repeatedly pursue them. Write your own interview notes while the conversation is fresh: questions asked, examples used, where you became unclear, and what you would change. A career adviser or practice partner can evaluate a recreated answer without access to the employer's private assessment.
