An accountant interview answer should explain more than which spreadsheet function you know. Show how you established that a number was reliable, handled an exception, and left enough evidence for someone else to review your work.
Start with the actual vacancy. Accounts payable, general ledger, tax and management accounting involve different work. These are original practice questions for operational accounting roles, not a prediction of any employer's interview or a substitute for the relevant accounting standards.
1. How would you investigate a reconciliation difference?
Name the two records, confirm that their dates and scope match, and distinguish timing differences from missing or incorrect entries. Do not start by forcing the balances to agree.
Consider this hypothetical bank reconciliation:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Bank statement closing balance | $18,450 |
| Deposit recorded in the ledger but not yet on the statement | $1,200 |
| Outstanding check | $650 |
| Ledger balance before a missing bank fee | $19,080 |
| Bank fee shown on the statement but not in the ledger | $80 |
The adjusted bank balance is $18,450 + $1,200 - $650 = $19,000. The ledger also reaches $19,000 after the $80 fee is recorded through the appropriate review and posting process.

Explain the evidence behind each adjustment. A deposit is not a timing difference merely because that explanation makes the reconciliation work. You would trace the transaction and check subsequent clearing. A tidy total is the end of the investigation, not proof that the investigation was sound.
2. What would you do if a close deadline arrived before support did?
A useful answer names what is missing, the affected account, the consequence of delay and who can authorize the next step. Separate a supported estimate under the applicable policy from an invented number.
You might say: "I would identify the unsupported items early, tell the reviewer what I could and could not establish, and agree the treatment and follow-up owner. I would not label an unresolved account reconciled just to finish the checklist."
Add a real example if you have one. State whether you prepared the work, reviewed it or made the final decision. Those are different responsibilities.
3. Tell me about an error you found or made
Choose an example with a clear correction trail. Describe the original entry, how the error was detected, the approved correction and the prevention step. Avoid disclosing confidential figures from a former employer.
An answer about a duplicate invoice is stronger when it explains the matching check and escalation than when it simply says you are detail-oriented. If the error was yours, own it without claiming that one extra check eliminated every future risk. Our guide to answering questions about a mistake can help you structure that account.
4. How do you check a spreadsheet before relying on it?
Discuss checks that fit the workbook: source completeness, date range, duplicate records, formula coverage and reconciliation to an independent total. Describe how you would notice a missing row, not just whether the formula returns a number.
For a real automation example, explain the old process, what changed, and how you tested exceptions. "Saved time" needs a defensible measurement; "created an exception report that a reviewer could trace to the source" is useful even without a dramatic percentage.
5. How would you explain a variance to a non-accountant?
Separate the amount, the drivers and the decision required. For example, an expense increase could reflect volume, price, timing or a classification issue. Establish which before telling a manager that spending is out of control.
Prepare a short version first, then offer the supporting detail. This tests whether you can make financial information understandable without hiding uncertainty.
Build a small evidence set before the interview
Prepare one reconciliation, one deadline decision, one correction and one process improvement from your actual work or clearly labeled coursework. For each, note what you personally did and who approved the result. Intuit's accounting interview guidance is another useful source of role-specific practice; adapt preparation to the vacancy rather than memorizing a universal script.
Ask the interviewer how reconciliations are reviewed, what makes close difficult and what the first successful month would involve. These questions for a hiring manager can help you turn the conversation toward the actual job.
