Interview technology is not one system. It can schedule a meeting, transcribe a call, deliver an assessment, rank application data, or support a human decision. The safest preparation begins by identifying what the tool does, what data it uses, and what the employer permits.
Map the technology to the hiring decision
Start by separating logistics from evaluation. A scheduling assistant has a different consequence from an automated assessment, and a meeting transcript is different from a model that recommends candidates. Ask what technology will be used, whether it affects a decision, and whether a person reviews the output.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission maintains an AI and algorithmic fairness resource hub because automated tools can still create employment-discrimination risks. A vendor label such as “AI-powered” does not tell you whether the system is accurate, fair, or appropriate for your situation.
Prepare for the format, not an imagined algorithm
For a recorded or live video interview, test the environment, audio, framing, and connection using the video interview guide. For a coding, writing, or work-sample assessment, ask about time limits, permitted resources, accessibility, and how submissions are reviewed.
Do not optimize facial expressions, keywords, or speaking cadence for an assumed scoring model unless the employer explicitly explains one. That strategy can make answers less natural and rests on claims you cannot verify.
Use AI before an interview without outsourcing your candidacy
AI can help generate practice questions, identify gaps in a draft, or simulate follow-up. Check every factual claim, rewrite in your own voice, and practice without hidden assistance so you can explain each statement independently.
During a live interview or assessment, follow the stated rules. If the employer has not addressed AI use, ask rather than infer permission. Hidden real-time assistance can violate process rules and leaves you unable to defend the answer when the conversation changes.
Protect privacy and access
Read notices about recording, transcription, retention, and data sharing. Ask for an accommodation or alternative process when a disability, connectivity constraint, or inaccessible tool prevents a fair assessment. Keep copies of the instructions and the contact channel.
Never install unverified software or provide bank credentials to participate in an interview. Recruitment scams often imitate legitimate tools; confirm the job and sender through the employer’s official careers site before sharing sensitive information.
Evaluate claims with evidence
The Federal Trade Commission tells companies to support AI performance claims, and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework emphasizes context, measurement, and ongoing risk management. Candidates can apply the same discipline: ask what a tool measures, where it can fail, and who is accountable.
When you do not know how a system works, say so. The unknown-answer guide offers a useful pattern: state what is known, identify the missing information, and explain how you would verify it.
