A manager reviews opportunity evidence before forecasting

A sales manager interview should show how you lead a sales system, not only how you personally close a deal. Prepare to explain the evidence behind your forecast, how you diagnose performance gaps, and where you focus the team's time.

BLS describes sales-management work as including goals, analysis, and staff development. The scenarios below are original practice prompts, not claims about a particular company's interview process.

Your pipeline is three times target. Is the quarter safe?

Not from that ratio alone. In a fictional example, a 300,000 pipeline against a 100,000 target gives three-times coverage. It does not establish that 100,000 will close this quarter.

Ask about opportunity quality, customer-confirmed next steps, decision timing, stage definitions, and concentration. A single large deal can make coverage look healthy while leaving the quarter exposed.

An illustrative response:

I would separate pipeline volume from the forecast. I would review the evidence for the deals expected this quarter, especially decision access, unresolved approvals, and customer timing. I would show the committed view, the risks, and the upside separately rather than applying an arbitrary win rate to every opportunity.

If your organization uses probability-weighted forecasts, explain how probabilities are calibrated and their limitations; do not pretend a weighted total is a guarantee.

One rep is missing target. How do you coach them?

Locate the gap before prescribing more activity. Is the issue prospect selection, meeting conversion, discovery, progression, or closing? Compare opportunity mix and ramp stage before treating all representatives as directly comparable.

Choose a specific behavior to observe and practice, agree on support, and set a review point. "I motivate them to work harder" does not explain coaching.

How do you handle an unreliable forecast?

Distinguish unclear definitions from poor evidence or avoidance of bad news. Make it safe to report risk while holding the team accountable for accurate updates.

In a real example, describe the change you made and whether forecast accuracy improved under the same definition. Do not claim success because the team lowered its forecast after the result was already known.

How would you prioritize a territory with limited capacity?

Explain the evidence you would use to choose accounts or segments, including fit, opportunity, existing commitments, and effort. Identify what the team would stop doing.

Avoid treating every lead as equally valuable or assuming historical revenue alone determines future potential. State the uncertainty and how you would review the choice.

What would you ask the interviewer?

Ask how stages are defined, how territories are allocated, and what proportion of the role is coaching versus individual selling. Clarify the sales cycle and team maturity before importing a playbook from a different environment.

Use behavioral interview preparation to select a real leadership story. The questions-to-ask-a-hiring-manager guide can help you evaluate the role's expectations without turning the interview into an interrogation.
